Exploring the Lillian Kellman Nature Reserve in Murrysville

In the heart of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, lies a serene expanse that offers a respite from the urban sprawl: the Lillian Kellman Nature Reserve. This 56-acre neighborhood park, together with the adjacent Peter and Victoria Skena Nature Reserve, forms a verdant oasis amid one of the area's most densely populated regions.

The reserves boast several loop trails that meander through the wooded areas, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature without venturing far from home. A stream and a pond add to the tranquility of the reserves, with the boundary between the Kellman and Skena Reserves running along the dam of the pond.

Accessibility is a key feature of the Lillian Kellman Nature Reserve. Parking areas at the end of Kellman Drive and Evergreen Drive provide convenient entry points for those looking to explore the trails or simply enjoy a quiet walk with their dog. The Skena Reserve also has a parking area on North Hills Road, ensuring that this hidden jewel is within easy reach for all.

The Murrysville Trail Alliance, a dedicated community organization, has issued a detailed map for both the Kellman and Skena Nature Reserves, reflecting their commitment to preserving and promoting the natural beauty of the area.

For those seeking directions, the reserve is easily accessible from Route 22, with clear signage leading to the two main entrances. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor, the Lillian Kellman Nature Reserve is open from dawn to dusk, inviting all to partake in the peaceful ambiance that this natural haven provides.

🚑 Murrysville EMS Gets Financial Lift from State, Challenges Remain

Murrysville's emergency medical services are seeing a financial boost thanks to Pennsylvania's Act 15, which raises Medicaid reimbursement rates to match federal Medicare levels and compensates for the first 20 miles of ambulance transport. Local EMS directors, including Murrysville Medic One's Darrick Gerano and New Kensington Ambulance Services' Addie Birch, have praised the legislation as a positive change. However, they note that the funding still falls short of covering the full costs of their services.

The insurance reimbursement system remains a critical issue, with payments often not reflecting the true expenses of emergency calls. Despite the legislative progress, EMS providers continue to operate at a loss, underscoring the need for further financial support to ensure the sustainability of these essential services.

🎄Murrysville's Monticello Drive Gears Up for the 3rd Annual Holiday Lights Spectacular

Murrysville residents are in for a treat this holiday season as the 3rd Annual Monticello Lights event is set to illuminate the winter nights. This year, the festive celebration will take place on the weekend of December 9th & 10th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at 538 Monticello Drive. Attendees are invited to tune into 88.9 FM to enjoy holiday music that perfectly syncs with the dazzling light displays.

The event promises to unveil new displays, adding to the already anticipated excitement. Organizers are hinting at numerous surprises, aiming to create a magical and memorable experience for all who attend.

In the spirit of giving, Monticello Lights is also a charitable event, supporting WTAE's Project Bundle Up and the Delmont Borough Police Department. Visitors can make their contributions through various means, including cash, check, or Venmo donations, with donation jars conveniently placed throughout the neighborhood. Those who wish to make a tax-deductible donation can do so by check, ensuring it's made out to either of the charities.

Moreover, the event offers a competitive twist—neighbors vie to present the most impressive light display. Guests can vote for their favorite by including the house number with their Venom donation or by placing their donation in the box at the display of their choice. All donations received will be evenly distributed between the two charities, with the goal of making this year's event even more successful than the last.
