Caywood Nature Reserve: Murrysville's Link in the Chain of Trails

Nestled within the heart of Murrysville, the Caywood Nature Reserve stands as a testament to the vision of the late Jane Caywood and her family's dedication to land conservation. This reserve, located at 4294 Hills Church Road, was initially part of Jane Caywood's property, which she willed to the Westmoreland Conservancy in 2005. In a move that would expand the reserve's reach and accessibility, her son and daughter facilitated the Conservancy's purchase of an adjacent 2-plus-acre parcel, creating a vital access point to Hills Church Road. Additionally, nearly 6 acres on the west side of the road were donated, further contributing to the reserve's expanse.

Adjacent to the Murrysville Community Park on the east, the Caywood Nature Reserve serves as a critical link in the area's network of green spaces. It connects to the King Reserve above Mamont Road through two trail easements, weaving the natural landscape into the fabric of the community. These easements—one with Dominion above Tonkin Station and another with the Shagbark development—highlight the collaborative spirit that underpins the reserve's existence.

The Caywood Reserve's significance is magnified as it forms the central link of the Don Harrison Community Trail. This 5-mile-plus trail, established in cooperation with the Municipality of Murrysville, honors a past president of the Westmoreland Conservancy whose foresight helped to preserve these natural corridors for public enjoyment.

The Caywood Nature Reserve invites visitors to step into a space where community, conservation, and connectivity converge. It's a living legacy that offers a slice of tranquility and a continuous reminder of the importance of preserving natural landscapes for future generations to enjoy.

🏈 Franklin Regional Falls to Peters Township in WPIAL Class 5A Quarterfinals

In a challenging WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal matchup, Franklin Regional's Panthers faced off against the top-seeded Peters Township, known for their formidable defense. Despite a strong defensive start, Franklin Regional was unable to capitalize on early offensive opportunities, ultimately falling 35-0 to the Indians at Peters Township's home stadium.

The Panthers' defense initially held strong, but the offense struggled to convert early chances into points, which allowed Peters Township to control the game's pace with sustained drives. Peters Township, allowing only 6.5 points per game during the regular season, showcased their defensive prowess, shutting out the Panthers and advancing to the semifinals against Moon.

Franklin Regional's offense, led by junior quarterback Chase Lemke, had moments of potential, including a near-miss pass that could have led to an early score. However, Peters Township's defense was relentless, with sophomore quarterback Nolan DiLucia orchestrating multiple scoring drives, including a pivotal 18-yard touchdown pass and an 8-yard touchdown run that set the tone for the game.

The Panthers' efforts were further hampered by penalties and a turnover, which Peters Township capitalized on to extend their lead. DiLucia's impressive performance, both on the ground and through the air, was a key factor in the Indians' dominant victory.

Despite the loss, Franklin Regional's season included a strong run of six wins in seven games and a playoff qualification after finishing third in the Big East Conference. Coach Lance Getsy expressed pride in his team, particularly the seniors, and looked forward to the next season with determination.

🔔Volunteers Needed: Salvation Army's Bell-Ringing Tradition Continues in Delmont

The Salvation Army’s Delmont Service Center is calling upon the community to volunteer for its annual bell-ringing tradition, a hallmark of the organization's holiday fundraising efforts. With the season of giving upon us, the center seeks dedicated individuals to take up one-hour shifts, ringing bells to inspire and encourage public donations.

The bell-ringing shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., providing a flexible schedule for volunteers. The specific dates needing coverage are November 18, 24, and 25, followed by December 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, and 23. This time-honored volunteer activity is crucial for the Salvation Army, as the funds collected are instrumental in supporting their charitable work throughout the year.

The iconic Red Kettles will be stationed at a key location in the community—the Walmart on Hollywood Boulevard. This strategic placement is expected to garner attention and generosity from shoppers during the bustling holiday season.

The Salvation Army is extending an open invitation to individuals, groups, and corporate teams to join in this meaningful endeavor. It's an opportunity to engage in community service, spread holiday cheer, and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
