End of an Era: Salem's Wagon Wheel Restaurant to Close After Six Decades"
The Wagon Wheel, a cherished dining establishment in Salem, has announced it will close its doors after over six decades of operation. Established in 1956 by George and Mary "Hoppy" Jobe, this iconic restaurant has been a familiar sight along Route 22. Known for its unique interior adorned with wood paneling, nature art, and taxidermied animals, including a notable grizzly bear, the Wagon Wheel has been more than just a restaurant for many; it has been a place of memories and traditions. Jodi Susick, a longtime patron, reminisces about her childhood visits, highlighting the restaurant's famous red devil's food cake, a favorite among many customers.
As the restaurant prepares to close, there's a sense of nostalgia among both the staff and the patrons. Mary Ann Huey, a waitress who has served at the Wagon Wheel for over forty years, shares her experiences and the connection she has with the customers, some of whom she has known for decades. The current owners, Mimi Jobe Kaufman, Sharon McGoff, and Wendy Jobe, daughters of the second-generation owner Dick Jobe, have maintained the legacy of the family's restaurant. As the community bids farewell to this local landmark, the impending closure has sparked a flurry of requests for their famous recipes, particularly the red devil’s food cake, as loyal customers seek to hold on to a piece of the Wagon Wheel's culinary history
