A Sweet Legacy: Wagon Wheel's Red Cake Still Available Post-Closure

In Salem, the cherished Wagon Wheel restaurant, co-owned by Mimi Kaufman and her sisters, is closing its doors. However, the legacy of their renowned red cake dessert lives on. After the announcement of the restaurant's closure, there was an overwhelming demand for this signature dessert, leading Kaufman and her sisters to decide to continue offering whole red cakes for sale.

The red devil’s food cake, a staple at Wagon Wheel since the 1980s, gained immense popularity, especially in the last two decades. Despite the restaurant's closure, Kaufman, finding herself out of a job, embraced this opportunity. She has arranged with their supplier to sell the cakes on a limited basis, adapting to the new circumstances.

Within a day of announcing the continuation of the red cake sales on Facebook, the post received over 650 likes, indicating strong customer support. The cakes, priced at $30 each, can be ordered by calling the Wagon Wheel. For now, orders are taken from Tuesday to Saturday, between 8 a.m. and noon, with pickups at the former restaurant location. Kaufman remains open to adjusting the schedule based on demand and hopes to expand to evening hours in the future.

Steve Boeser, contracted by Murrysville, plays a crucial role in keeping the roads clear by collecting roadkill deer, a task made easier by colder weather. With 25 years of experience, he has adapted to the changing nature of his work, which now often includes searching for deer off-road.

In Murrysville, he has collected 157 deer this year, part of a larger state and national issue with deer collisions. His work not only keeps the roads safe but also contributes to scientific research on wildlife diseases.
