Lane swimmer

Dan Taylor takes over as the new swimming coach at Franklin Regional, succeeding Vic Santoro. With a mix of experienced and young talent, including standout swimmers Holden Thomas and Ben Holm, the boys' team is poised for success.

The girls' team, led by juniors like Kate Bunker and a strong group of freshmen, shows promise despite the absence of senior swimmers. Taylor, also a teacher in the district, is optimistic about the future of both teams.

Franklin Regional Grads Clash: Lee Secures Victory in Freestyle Championship

Ttwo Franklin Regional High School alumni, Spencer Lee and Nico Megaludis, faced off in the finals of the Senior National Men’s Freestyle Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. Spencer Lee, a 2017 graduate, clinched victory with a 6-2 win over 2011 graduate Nico Megaludis. Lee's exceptional performance was marked by two initial takedowns in the first period, followed by another in the second, leading him to triumph in the 57 kg weight class.

Both wrestlers, having showcased remarkable prowess, have earned spots in the upcoming Olympic Team Trials scheduled for April 19 and 20 at Penn State. This win for Lee mirrored their previous encounter at the 2023 Bill Farrell Men’s Freestyle Championship, where he also emerged victorious over Megaludis.

Reflecting on their high school careers, Megaludis left an impressive legacy with a 170-1 record and three PIAA Class 3A championships. His collegiate journey at Penn State further burnished his reputation, earning him an NCAA championship and the title of a three-time All-American. Lee, with a stellar 144-1 record, paralleled this success. He was not only a three-time PIAA Class 3A champion but also a distinguished athlete at the University of Iowa, achieving three NCAA Division I titles and five All-American honors.

Delmont Meals on Wheels Rallies Community Support for Winter Weather Kits

In Western Pennsylvania, Delmont Meals on Wheels is proactively preparing for winter by assembling Winter Weather Kits for their 50 recipients, despite forecasts suggesting a mild season. This initiative, led by Lois Bowman and now in its fourth year, is designed to ensure that clients have essential food and supplies during potential snow days. The community has responded enthusiastically, with donations growing significantly in a short period.

Essential items for the kits include soup, macaroni and cheese mix, tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal, crackers, toilet paper, and tissues. The Delmont library is serving as a collection point for donations until December 19. After the collection period, the kits will be packed in cloth bags donated by Walmart in Blairsville and distributed by volunteers.

This initiative reflects a broader trend among local Meals on Wheels programs to prepare for winter. For example, the East Suburban Meals on Wheels in Monroeville distributed Blizzard Bags, and the Murrysville program awaits kits from local Girl Scout troops and the Franklin Regional cheerleading program.

For those interested in donating or volunteering, they can drop off items at the Delmont library until December 19 or email [email protected] for more information on volunteering.
