In a move to promote environmental sustainability, has initiated a Christmas tree recycling program this holiday season. Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling is leading the charge, encouraging residents to bring their live Christmas trees to designated drop-off sites across the county after the festive period.

This recycling effort, dubbed "Christmas Tree-Cycling," aims to repurpose these trees for ecological benefits. The trees collected will be chipped into mulch, which will then be used to enhance the beauty of community parks or as a surface for hiking trails. This process not only aids in soil enrichment but also contributes to the natural decomposition cycle.

In an innovative approach to environmental conservation, trees not converted into mulch will be placed in natural areas to create habitats for wildlife. This strategy plays a crucial role in ecological preservation, including shoreline stabilization and improving fish habitats. The recycling of Christmas trees stands as a stark contrast to their disposal in landfills, which leads to unnecessary waste and space consumption.

One of the key locations for this program is in Murrysville, where a recycling event is scheduled at the Windstream parking lot near Giant Eagle. This event is hosted by the Murrysville/Export Rotary and will take place on January 6th and 13th from 9 am to 1 pm. Community members are encouraged to participate in this initiative, which not only disposes of Christmas trees responsibly but also contributes positively to the local environment.

Export Teen Sentenced to Prison for 2020 Jeannette Shooting Incident

In October 2020, a violent altercation in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, led to the shooting of two men by Khalil Myers, then 16 years old. The incident took place in a South Third Street residence, following a heated confrontation that also involved the mother of one of the victims. Myers, who was from Export, faced serious charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

The victims, Austin Mathias and Anthony Bittinger, both sustained injuries but survived. The dispute escalated when Myers, armed with a 9mm handgun, responded to threats from Mathias and Bittinger, who were also armed. Following the shooting, Myers fled the scene and attempted to dispose of the weapon.

Recently, Myers, now 19, appeared in the Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court, where Judge Tim Krieger handed down a sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison, plus a year of probation. This sentence came after Myers' guilty plea to aggravated assault charges, while the attempted homicide charge was dismissed. Efforts to transfer Myers' case to juvenile court, which would have limited his incarceration, were previously rejected by the court.

👮‍♂️Murrysville Business Owner Shows Compassion in Court, Requests Leniency for Arsonist

Monica Meehan, the owner of a business destroyed by arson, displayed compassion in a Westmoreland County courtroom by requesting leniency for the perpetrator, Brian P. Lucas. Lucas, who set fire to the Spaghetti & Steakhouse and Hot Rod Lounge in Murrysville, received a sentence of 2½ to 5 years in prison and two years probation.

Meehan's empathy, influenced by her experiences with drug addiction, played a role in the judge's decision for a reduced sentence. Lucas, who admitted to his crime and its drug-related motives, also faces a financial restitution order exceeding $1 million.
