🚔 Delmont Police Department Shuffles Ranks

Delmont Police Department has welcomed Officer David Johnston as its latest full-time member. The transition was made official during the borough council's meeting on September 12. Johnston stepped into the role following the resignation of Officer Richard Stephens in late August. Since September 1, Johnston has been serving the borough in a full-time capacity.

The council didn't just stop at acknowledging Stephens' departure and Johnston's new role. They also gave a unanimous nod to Aaron Thompson, who will now fill the part-time position previously held by Johnston.

🐶 Delmont Residents Rally for New Dog Park Amidst Rising Pet Registrations!

Residents of Delmont have approached their local council with a proposal to introduce a dog park and implement speed humps on West Pittsburgh Street.

In 2023 alone, Delmont has seen over 300 dog license applications. Becky Kurtz, a resident of Freeport Street, emphasized the community's desire for an off-leash dog park to ensure their pets' well-being. She was backed by numerous other residents who shared her sentiment.

The idea of a dog park isn't new to the region. Recently, nearby areas like Murrysville, Penn Township, and Hempfield have established their own. According to Kurtz, these parks are not only beneficial for the community but are also economical and easy to maintain. Typically, these parks are divided into sections for larger and smaller dogs and are enclosed with 4-foot-high metal fences. She also highlighted the availability of grants from companies, such as Purina, that can assist in funding such projects.

Kurtz proposed the Shields Farm property, close to the Delmont Area Athletic Association’s field complex, as a suitable site for the dog park. In response, council President Andy Shissler mentioned that they are currently devising a comprehensive plan for the utilization of Shields Farm in the upcoming years and will certainly consider the dog park proposal.
