Veterinary Technician Accused of Illegally Refilling Xanax Prescription for Deceased Dog

A veterinary technician from Delmont, Bobbi Jo Vaia, is accused of trying to refill a Xanax prescription for her deceased dog, who was euthanized four months prior.

Vaia allegedly filled the prescription five times post the dog's death, amounting to 1500 pills. She was arrested on charges including identity theft and acquisition by misrepresentation, and later released on a $50,000 bail.

Vaia reportedly used the names of a U.S. marshal and a state trooper falsely claiming ongoing investigations to cover her tracks. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 10, with her veterinary technician license set to expire in November 2024.

Pittsburgh Rental Assistance Program Faces Rapid Depletion Amid Unprecedented Demand

Pittsburgh's Housing Stabilization Program, which aids renters in need, is on track to exhaust its annual budget of $525,000 in about three months due to a surge in demand, largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic's economic repercussions.

Despite the rapid depletion of this fund, Kyle Webster of Action Housing emphasized that other financial resources are still available for rental assistance, including funds from the American Rescue Plan, state grants, and private contributions.

The program, which started in March, has been a vital support system for low-income residents in Pittsburgh, with eligibility criteria based on the area's median income. Officials are actively seeking additional funding avenues to continue supporting the residents amidst the ongoing housing crisis exacerbated by the pandemic.

Steelers' Veteran Heyward Faces Uncertain Future Following Groin Injury in Season Opener

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bracing themselves for a potential long-term absence of their veteran defensive lineman, Cameron Heyward, following a groin injury he sustained during their initial season game against the San Francisco 49ers, which ended in a 30-7 defeat, as per NFL Network's Monday report.

The network hinted at the possibility of surgery for the 34-year-old Heyward, who is stepping into his 13th season in the NFL. The Steelers are scheduled to face the Cleveland Browns in their upcoming Monday night game.

Despite being seen in the locker room during a media session on Monday, Heyward refrained from interacting with the journalists and seemed to be walking without any visible discomfort as he proceeded to a team meeting.

Remarkably, Heyward has maintained an impressive attendance record, not missing a single game due to injuries since the latter half of the 2016 season, which saw him on the injured reserve list owing to a pectoral muscle tear. In recognition of his prowess, he has been selected for the Pro Bowl six times and has completed a full 17-game roster in the last two seasons.

However, Heyward's recent participation has been limited, with only 10 snaps in the preseason's second game and a brief appearance on the injury report last week due to a stomach problem. His full participation in practice was noted only on Friday.

During the recent loss to the 49ers, Heyward was on the field for just 14 out of 68 defensive snaps. Despite attempting to rejoin the game twice after the injury, he was forced to retreat to the sideline after a single snap each time, eventually sitting out the latter half of the game.

The Steelers are also monitoring the conditions of DeMarvin Leal, who is recovering from an elbow injury incurred during the game, and Larry Ogunjobi, who has been limited in practice due to a foot issue.

In light of Heyward's injury, the Steelers might look to veteran Armon Watts to step up, who was inactive during the opener but is gearing up for his fifth season. Additionally, three-year veteran Breiden Fehoko, who is currently on the practice squad after missing out on a spot in the 53-man roster, might also be considered as a potential replacement.

CJ Abrams' Stellar Multi-Homer Game Propels Nationals to a 6-2 Victory Over Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates

In Monday night's game, the Washington Nationals get the win over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-2 score, largely thanks to CJ Abrams' standout performance where he homered twice, marking his first career multi-homer game.

Pitcher Patrick Corbin also had a notable contribution, pitching into the seventh inning and securing his first 10-win season since 2019. Despite a recent rough patch, Corbin managed to restrict the Pirates to just two runs and five hits over nearly seven innings.

The Nationals, who have been struggling lately, managed to secure their third win in 11 games.

On the other hand, the Pirates couldn't sustain momentum, with Bryan Reynolds' and Ji Hwan Bae's RBI hits being the only highlights. The Pirates' offense couldn't string together enough hits to challenge Corbin and the Nationals, ultimately succumbing to a well-rounded performance by the Nationals.
