A man from Maryland, who was sought for weapons-related offenses in Florida, is now in jail awaiting a hearing to determine his extradition. This arrest occurred after a traffic stop in Murrysville.
On October 9, local police stopped a tractor-trailer in Murrysville. The reason for the stop was the driver's unexpected U-turn on Tarr Hollow Road, which led to him driving onto a residential property and causing noticeable damage.
Upon being stopped, the driver presented a Florida driver’s license that identified him as Ramondouas C. Betrand, aged 42. The local authorities were informed that Betrand had an outstanding felony warrant from Florida. The charges against him include aggravated assault, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of firearms and ammunition despite being a prohibited felon. These charges are connected to an incident that took place in October 2022. Betrand had missed his initial court appearance in Florida, leading to the issuance of the arrest warrant.
After the arrest, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida was informed of Betrand's detention. He was not granted bail and was subsequently sent to the Westmoreland County Prison. The hearing to decide on his extradition is scheduled for Thursday at the court of District Judge Timothy Krieger in Greensburg.

It's that time of the year again when the spirit of the blue and gold comes alive at Franklin Regional High School. The school is all set to celebrate its Homecoming week, honoring the past, present, and future of the proud Panther community.
The festivities kick off with the much-anticipated Homecoming Bonfire on Thursday, October 19th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This traditional event, which will be held at the FR Senior High School grounds on 3200 Old William Penn Hwy, promises games, food, and performances by the FR Panther Band & Cheerleaders. In case of rain, the bonfire will be rescheduled to October 26th. Proceeds from the evening will benefit individual school clubs.
The excitement continues into Friday, October 20th, with a pre-game ceremony at 6:30 PM at the Panther Stadium. In keeping with tradition, the 2023 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned, having been chosen by their senior peers. The main event of the evening, the face-off between Franklin Regional and North Hills, will kick off at 7:00 PM. The community is eagerly looking forward to cheering on the home team under the Friday night lights.
To wrap up the week, the "Viva Las Vegas" Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday evening. Students have been buzzing with anticipation, and ticket sales began on October 16th, available for purchase during QRT until the 19th. The dance is open to all high school students from grades 9-12. Juniors and seniors have the added privilege of bringing an outside guest, provided they submit the required forms available in Room 225 by October 13th.
The school district took to social media to share their enthusiasm, stating, "HOMECOMING week at Franklin Regional! We're celebrating the past, present, and future of the BLUE and GOLD!" They also encouraged the community to join in the celebrations, especially for the bonfire and the game.
With a week packed full of events, Franklin Regional High School is ready to showcase its Panther pride and bring the community together in celebration.
🌲Murrysville's Fading Living Landmark: A Glimpse into the World's Largest Arboreal Sign
Perched on a hill near the Murrysville–Monroeville border, a distinctive yet fading living landmark continues to evoke memories and admiration. The "tree sign" that spells out "Murrysville," once a clear and vibrant sight, has become less visible over the years, but its significance remains undiminished.
Originally landscaped by local Boy Scouts, this arboreal marvel was nationally recognized in 1947 when "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" featured it as the world's largest arboreal sign. Its letters, formed by strategically planted trees, once stood out prominently against the landscape, guiding residents and visitors alike.
"While the sign isn't as pronounced as it once was, its essence and what it represents to Murrysville hasn't faded," remarks local historian Jane Thompson. "It's a testament to our history, a story of community collaboration, and a living emblem of our town's unique identity."
1993
Over the decades, nature and time have taken their toll, making the sign less discernible. However, community efforts to maintain and occasionally rejuvenate the sign have been persistent. The tree sign's legacy continues to spark interest, drawing both locals and visitors keen to catch a glimpse of this historical gem.
As Murrysville looks to the future, the tree sign stands as a gentle reminder of its past, symbolizing the town's enduring spirit and the memories shared by its community.
