🏈 Panthers Fend Off Furious Knights Comeback, Remain in Playoff Hunt
Franklin Regional remained in the hunt for the Big East playoffs after defeating Norwin 37-29 on Friday night. The Panthers got big offensive performances from Ayden Hudock and Chase Lemke to build an early lead. Hudock scored four touchdowns, including a 92-yard kickoff return to open the game and three touchdown receptions. Lemke threw for 247 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 90 yards.
The Panthers jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead, but Norwin mounted a furious comeback attempt in the second half behind quarterback Tristyn Tavares. Tavares threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns while also running for two scores. The Knights cut the deficit to just eight points late in the fourth quarter but could not complete the rally.
Franklin Regional's defense came up with some key stops to maintain the lead, including three sacks by Juliano Marion. The Panthers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while Norwin fell to 2-5 and 1-2. Franklin Regional coach Lance Getsy credited his team's defense and Lemke's performance for the victory. Norwin coach Mike Brown said his team needs to start games faster after falling behind early again.
Murrysville Tackles Acid Mine Drainage to Restore Local Watershed
Officials in Murrysville have taken steps to clean up acid mine drainage polluting Lyons Run, a tributary of nearby Turtle Creek. The town will hire a company to neutralize the heavy metals present in three mine water sources within the Lyons Run watershed. The $2 million project is being funded through grants secured in part by the Lyons Run Watershed Association.
The project will use a series of ponds containing limestone beds to remove the metals from the water by imparting alkalinity. The limestone neutralizes the acidity of the mine drainage. The water will be cleaned twice through the limestone beds before being filtered through a series of constructed wetlands.
Removing the metals from Lyons Run is expected to help reestablish the food chain in the ecosystem. With the metals gone, organisms at the bottom of the chain should return, followed by fish and other animals higher up the chain. Officials hope to have a company hired and construction underway by June 2024. The project is seen as an important step in improving the health of the watershed, which covers over 17 miles of streams across 9 square miles.
